Learners in Soweto are gearing up for the new school year by getting physical through an Active Education programme sponsored by the IMPERIAL Group and Europcar. The Active Education programme will roll out at 35 schools in Soweto and Orange Farm, and aims to bring back physical education as an integral part of the school curriculum as well as develop the surrounding communities through the power of sport. 28 000 learners will participate in the programme each week. “We were encouraged by the good work Active Education has done in the past and when we saw an opportunity to get involved in a project in Soweto, we jumped at the chance. Soweto is important to us because so many of our own people live there and we want to make sure that local communities can benefit from keeping children occupied, fit and active,” says Dawn Nathan-Jones, CEO of Europcar.“We also hope to encourage safer road use among school children by promoting IMPERIAL’s I-Pledge road safety initiative through our partnership with Active Education,” adds Nathan-Jones. Learners from each of the schools were scientifically tested last year to establish their basic physical abilities and sporting education needs. Specific sports development programmes were then developed to address particular strengths and areas requiring improvement or attention. Schools and classes will now be given individually-tailored modules to roll out during the year.
